Nicole's Tot-Time
is eco-friendly

In
addition to composting and recycling we also ...
Use non-toxic chemicals or treatments inside
and outside of the daycare to control pests and weeds. If the
problem persists, a pesticide application may be necessary. Parents
will be notified in advance and a licensed professional will apply the least
toxic effective product during a time when the children will not be exposed.
All fruits and vegetables are washed
thoroughly to minimize the exposure to pesticides.
The daycare humidity levels are maintained
year round to avoid mould and mildew growths.
Vehicles are not permitted to idle when
dropping off or picking up children.
Do not permit smoking anywhere on the premises at any given time.
Antibacterial cleaners or hand soaps are
used only when necessary.
Non-toxic, biodegradable, cleaning products
are used when possible. When chemical products are required, they will
be used as per instructions on the label. All cleaning products are
stored in a manner that is safe to the children. Unless absolutely
possible chemical cleaners are not used during daycare hours.
Avoid possible lead exposure by running and
using only cold tap water for cooking and drinking purposes and do not use
imported or handmade pottery for cooking, storing, or serving of food or
beverages.
Only use digital thermometers or thermostats
to reduce the use of mercury products.
Safely store and recycle batteries and
fluorescent / compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Ensure that all furniture and equipment is
in good condition to avoid possible exposure to flame retardants.
As much as possible furniture is made
of solid wood, with as few items as possible made of particleboard.
Do not have wall-to-wall carpeting in the
daycare rooms.
Area rugs are vacuumed daily and cleaned at
least twice a year.
We use only
non-toxic arts and craft supplies.
Use only garbage cans with lids to avoid
pests and odours.
This eco friendly checklist is adapted from the
OEC checklist for environmentally
friendly daycares.
